The Challenge
A historic New York City school needed to modernize its outdoor space while creating a meaningful environment for students and faculty to learn, gather, and reflect. The active school site also presented significant access and installation challenges.

The Approach
John Mini created a transitional succession planting with native shrubs and perennials, custom trellis structures, powder-coated aluminum planters, and an integrated water garden. Because of the site's constraints, materials had to be carefully coordinated and hoisted over the school, with portions of the installation completed during school breaks.

The Outcome
The result is an outdoor learning and reflection space that reconnects students with the region's ecology, combining bold landscape architecture with quieter spaces for individual reflection. The project received a 2019 NALP Award.
